Jenn-Air induction and electric cooktops feature a ceramic glass surface that requires specific care to prevent cracks, scratches, and thermal stress damage. Proper cookware and cleaning practices significantly extend the life of the glass surface.
Affected Models
All Jenn-Air induction cooktops (JIC series), electric cooktops, and electric downdraft cooktops with glass surfaces. Both RISE and NOIR design expressions.
Prevention Guidelines
- Never place cold or frozen cookware on a hot zone — thermal shock can crack the glass
- Do not slide heavy cast iron cookware across the surface — always lift and place
- Clean sugar spills immediately while the surface is still warm — caramelized sugar bonds to glass and causes permanent pitting
- Use only flat-bottomed cookware sized to match the cooking zone
- Do not use the cooktop as a cutting board, work surface, or storage area
- Avoid dropping heavy objects on the glass surface
Signs of Glass Stress
Watch for hairline cracks, discoloration around heating zones, or a change in heating behavior on specific zones. Any visible crack — no matter how small — means the zone must not be used until the glass is replaced. A cracked glass surface is an electrical shock hazard.
Urgency Level
Routine care advisory. Stop using any zone with a cracked surface immediately — cracked glass is a shock and burn hazard.
