The self-clean cycle on Jenn-Air wall ovens reaches extremely high temperatures — approximately 900°F (480°C). While this effectively burns off food residue, the intense heat requires precautions to protect your kitchen, cabinetry, and the oven itself.
Affected Models
All Jenn-Air wall ovens with self-clean functionality, including single ovens, double ovens (JJW series), and combination microwave-oven units.
Safety Precautions Before Self-Cleaning
- Remove all racks, oven thermometers, and accessories — the heat can warp metal components
- Remove the oven temperature probe if inserted
- Ensure the kitchen is well ventilated — open windows or run the range hood exhaust
- Keep children and pets away from the oven during the cycle — the exterior becomes very hot
- Remove any items stored in cabinetry directly above a wall oven — heat rises
- Do not leave the house during the self-clean cycle
After Self-Cleaning
Allow the oven to cool completely before opening the door. The door lock will not disengage until the temperature drops below the safety threshold (typically 550°F). Wipe out ash residue with a damp cloth once cool. Do not use chemical oven cleaners in a self-cleaning oven — they can damage the self-clean coating.
Urgency Level
Routine safety advisory. Follow these precautions every time you use the self-clean function.
