Jenn-Air downdraft cooktops have an integrated ventilation system that pulls cooking fumes, smoke, and steam downward and exhausts them through ductwork. Proper ductwork installation and maintenance are essential for safe operation, particularly on gas models where incomplete ventilation poses carbon monoxide risks.
Affected Models
All Jenn-Air downdraft cooktops — electric downdraft and gas downdraft models. Also applicable to Jenn-Air ranges with integrated downdraft ventilation.
Ductwork Safety
- Ductwork must terminate outside the home — never into an attic, crawl space, or wall cavity
- Keep duct runs as short and straight as possible — each elbow reduces airflow efficiency
- Use rigid metal ductwork, not flexible foil — rigid metal handles grease better and is fire-resistant
- Install a backdraft damper at the exterior termination to prevent outside air entry
Maintenance
- Clean or replace grease filters monthly when cooking regularly
- Inspect ductwork annually for grease accumulation — heavy grease is a fire hazard
- Verify the blower motor operates when activated — a failed motor means no ventilation
- For gas models: if you smell gas or exhaust during cooking, stop using the cooktop and verify ventilation airflow
Carbon Monoxide Warning
Gas downdraft cooktops produce combustion byproducts including carbon monoxide. If the ventilation system is not working properly, these gases remain in the kitchen. Install a CO detector in the kitchen and test it monthly.
Urgency Level
High for gas models with suspected ventilation issues. Routine maintenance for electric models.
