Jenn-Air built-in refrigerators and column refrigerators older than 10 years may experience compressor overheating due to condenser coil contamination. Built-in installations are especially susceptible because the confined cabinet space limits airflow around the condenser.
Affected Models
All Jenn-Air built-in refrigerators and column refrigerators, particularly models older than 10 years. Built-in 42″ and 48″ side-by-side models and column units installed in tight cabinetry are most at risk.
Symptoms
- Refrigerator runs continuously without cycling off
- Compressor area is very hot to touch
- Clicking sounds as the compressor thermal protector trips and resets
- CF (condenser fan) or PC (compressor circuit) error codes on models with electronic displays
- Gradual temperature rise inside the refrigerator
Recommended Action
Clean the condenser coils every 6 months — more frequently if you have pets or if the kitchen generates significant cooking grease. On built-in models, access the coils through the bottom grille or by pulling the unit forward. Ensure the ventilation grille at the base is unobstructed. If the compressor continues to overheat after cleaning, schedule a professional inspection — the compressor may be approaching end of life.
Urgency Level
Moderate for routine cleaning. High if the compressor is clicking repeatedly — this indicates imminent compressor failure.
