CPSC Recall: Jenn-Air Downdraft Gas Cooktops — Fire Hazard (2004)

In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Maytag Corporation voluntarily recalled approximately 1,000 Jenn-Air downdraft gas cooktops due to a fire hazard. The recalled cooktops have switches located too close to the gas tubing leading to the grill burner — electrical arcing can cause the tubing to leak gas and ignite.

CPSC Recall Details

  • Recall Date: September 2004
  • Recall Number: 05-096
  • Units Affected: Approximately 1,000
  • Manufacturer: Maytag Corporation

Affected Models

Built-in Jenn-Air model JGD8348CDP downdraft gas cooktops with serial numbers xxxxxxxEA through xxxxxxxER, manufactured between January 1, 2004 and September 17, 2004. The model name and serial number are printed on a label on the vent fan housing, visible in the cabinet under the cooktop.

Hazard

The switches are located too close to the gas tubing leading to the grill burner. Electrical arcing can cause the tubing to leak gas and ignite. Maytag received four reports of cooktops catching fire during use as a result of a gas leak. No injuries were reported.

Sold At

Appliance stores nationwide from January 2004 through September 2004 for approximately $2,000.

Recommended Action

Consumers should stop using the grill or burners activated by the two left-hand controls and contact Maytag to schedule a free in-home repair. The center and right-hand burners can continue to be used safely.

Urgency Level

High — fire hazard. Stop using left-hand burners and grill immediately until repair is completed.
